The Continuous Quality Improvement conference in Sacramento, California
Whoa! What a whirlwind couple weeks.
It was spring break in Florida, and then I immediately went to New Orleans for PEAK Grantmaking to teach dataviz. Well, we were driving from Texas back to Florida, and my family dropped me off in New Orleans.
Then, I immediately flew to Sacramento for my 6th Continuous Quality Improvement conference. I gave a keynote on humanity in dataviz; a hands-on workshop on Excel dashboards; and a Data Cafe for technical assistance.
The view from the podium. No pressure! ;-)
Then, I immediately fly back to Orlando (on a red-eye, bleh) and taught dataviz for 2 days virtually for the CDC Foundation.
As usual, I was too busy doing the dataviz to tell you about online learning opportunities. :(
Simple Spreadsheets closes today
This is course 1 of 6. It's a prerequisite for my online courses about data storytelling, dashboards, reports, and presentations. In other words, you should take this course before considering any other courses. (Unless you can analyze data in your sleep, or you're already a SAS, SPSS, or R wizard. This course is analyzing-data-in-Excel-specific.)
There are 500+ Excel functions, but nobody needs to learn them all. Inside Simple Spreadsheets, you'll learn which ~50 Excel functions you need, and in which order.
Most importantly, you'll learn a process: from combining multiple datasets and tables together... to checking for duplicates, missing data, and outliers... to figuring out which formulas to use for frequencies vs. descriptives... to deciding whether you'll tackle your data headaches with formulas, pivot tables, or a mix of both.
You'll practice along with me, learning one technique at a time, from beginner through advanced techniques.
Then, you'll put it all together with case studies that are inspired hundreds of projects I've worked on over the years.
When you're stuck, you'll come to Office Hours, which are held live on Zoom. I'll get you un-stuck.

Is this course asynchronous, or live? Both! There are self-paced lessons that you can watch anytime around your own schedule. You’ll also be invited to live Office Hours.
How long does it take to complete? The course is the equivalent of a 2-day workshop (but broken into short 5- to 10-minute lessons). And, you’ll be invited to 25+ hour-long Office Hours sessions throughout 2025. You don’t need to complete 100% of the course to be successful. For example, you might choose to watch just some of the case studies that seem most relevant to your own workplace. The typical student attends some, but not all, of the live Office Hours sessions.
A bunch of us want to register. How many people do we need to qualify for a group rate? Groups of 2-24 people get 25% off. Groups of 25+ get 50% off. Please reply to this message and let us know the staff members’ names and email addresses. Then, our Operations Manager will send you a single invoice with your group rate applied. It’ll be much faster for you than enrolling people one at at time.
The registration page is adding sales tax, but my organization is tax-exempt. What should I do? You can either: (1) pay the sales tax, request a refund from the hosting company (Teachable) later, and get your refund in 4-6 weeks; or (2) reply to this message and we can send you an invoice through our accounting system without the sales tax.
Oh no! My boss is out of the office, so I’ll miss the registration deadline. Please reply to this message ASAP so we can hold your spot.
Can we hire you for a private workshop? Yes, I’d love to provide a workshop just for your team, either virtually or in-person! Please note: Group rates for online courses will always be more cost-effective than private workshops.
A trusted data visualization leader for more than 10 years. On-site workshops for 25,000 researchers, evaluators, and scientists in 31 states and 11 countries. Online courses for 10,000 participants. 200 consulting clients. 5 kids. 3.5 days of solo parenting while husband was doing his 2nd HYROX in DC this weekend. I even got a nap for a couple hours on Sunday while the 3 littlest kids were also sleeping!?! A miracle.
