Data Analysis as a Verb

Data analysis is a tricky term. It means different things to different people.

I use data analysis to describe the process of managing, cleaning, and tabulating data.

Data analysis is a verb -- not a noun. It's not a table, or a graph, or a stack of papers.

Sure, data analysis is the physical process of typing on your keyboard.

More importantly, data analysis is the mental process of questioning your dataset as you go: "Where are the outliers, and why? What are the trends, and why? Who else needs to know about the patterns -- my boss, peers, external stakeholders, community members?"

Simple Spreadsheets is my data analysis course, and it's open for once-a-year registration in March only.

Here's the very first lesson (shared with you as an unlisted YouTube video, not publicly). Fast-forward to 3:50 to hear about what you'll learn.

This isn't a basic "10 formulas you should know" class. It's broader and deeper. You'll learn what to do first, second, and third as you tackle a brand new dataset. The whys along with the how-tos. Closer to a university class than a 60-minute conference session.

This is a hybrid course that involves asynchronous lessons and live Office Hours. You get lifetime access to the latest version of the course, i.e., you'll automatically get all the newest lessons as I re-record them to teach you about some of the newest time-savers inside Excel. Lifetime access means you can learn slowly and steadily, at your own pace, around your own schedule.

Registration closes on March 31, 2025.
