DataViz News, Book Recommendation, & the 3-Finger Crop

Ann K. Emery at the Florida Philanthropic Network

Last week, I was invited to speak at the Florida Philanthropic Network's opening dinner. I met program officers, grants managers, and all sorts of philanthropists who are working to improve our communities. What an honor!

DataViz News

  • Apply to speak at Outlier, the Data Visualization Society's annual conference. Applications are due 2/28.
  • Did you know there's an Excel Collegiate Challenge? I never used Excel in college. I don't think I'd even heard of Excel in college. But maybe you know a college student who'd love this competition?
  • For the Tableau users, their annual conference is coming up May 5-7 in San Diego. I haven't personally attended (yet!) but I've heard great things about the event.

3 Open Consulting Days

Want to work together? I have 3 available days during March. Snag 1 or all 3.

How it works:

  • We jointly choose 1, 2, or 3 days on my calendar.
  • I work on your project exclusively from 9 - 5 that day.
  • We'll meet first thing in the morning, and then I'll be hustling behind the scenes to finesse your data.

Here's how I've used consulting days recently:

  • A foundation hired me for 2 days to clean, analyze, and visualize all the data needed for their annual report.
  • A foundation hired me for 1 day to create a slidedeck template that incorporated dataviz best practices, accessibility guidelines, and their existing fonts, colors, photos, and icons. Then, I also made 10 dataviz slides with maps, charts, and diagrams that showcased the work they'd accomplished recently.
  • An evaluation consulting firm hired me for 2 days to analyze qualitative data from an electronic survey; I wrote a report that visualized and synthesized all the key findings in beautiful qualitative dataviz.
  • An evaluation consulting firm hired me for 1 day to turn their draft report into a polished masterpiece; I created a report template using their client's colors, fonts, and photos, and then re-made all of the visualizations to ensure that they were up to the highest data storytelling standards.

Need help with your reports, slides, dashboards, infographics, or board books in March? Reach out.

Book Recommendation

I Am a Book. I Am a Portal to the Universe. is my favorite typography book of all time! It was researched, written, and designed by two dataviz legends, Stefanie Posavec and Miriam Quick.

For adults, it's an excellent lesson in text sizing, style, and arrangement.

For kids -- I just re-read it with my 7-year-old as part of our nightly reading -- they'll love the interactivity.

The 3-Finger Crop

Last week, I led 2 days of Powerful Presentations trainings for a federal agency.

One of Quick Wins we talked about was the 3-Finger Crop: When you're giving virtual presentations, your webcam should be angled so that there's three fingers of space between the top of your head and the edge of the screen.

Otherwise, if we're hiding from the camera... how about people supposed to trust us and trust our data?

This is what it looks like:
